Protected Designation of Origin of Txakoli: A Quality Assurance Scheme
Produced in the South of Europe, the Txakoli is unique in the world. Most Txakoli vineyards are found in very particular locations near the coast, in sunnier fields, sheltered from onshore sea breezes, but enjoying the influence of the winds coming from the Cantabrian Sea.
The Txakoli has preserved its traditional character thanks to its production remaining in the hands of small landowners that cultivate and work devotedly and diligently.
This sparkling, dry white wine, featuring a clear natural inspiration, boasts 3 distinct protected designations of origins (PDOs): Bizkaiako Txakolina, Getariako Txakolina, and Arabako Txakolina. Each and every one of these designations ensure the conscientious elaboration of the Txakoli and the highest quality controls.
The Txakoli is a white wine that is best served cold. Moreover, the Txakoli’s personality and uniqueness make it the perfect drink for any appetizer.
Recently, a Txakoli belonging to the Bizkaia PDO has been recognized as the best international white wine at the Brussels International Wine Contest (Concours Mondial de Bruxelle), in which 9,150 wines from 46 countries were featured. It is an award that adds overall value to the Txakoli PDO and all the effort and achievements from its three protected designations of origins.
